Baby Pileated Woodpeckers : While camping at Montauk State Park we found this Pileated Woodpecker nest when we where out fishing the river below the spring. I went back the next mourning to see if I could get some good pictures. I had to wait almost 20 minutes for the adult to come in to feed the young. The whole time I was waiting I never heard the young birds so I was afraid that maybe they had left the nest the day before.

Alien Bug : We have no idea what kind of insect this is. We saw it at a little road side park in Potosi Missouri in September of 2006. It was a little over one inch long. We did not touch it because we had no idea what it was or if it was poisons. It was hairy/fuzzy looking. If you have any idea what it is please let us know or if you know someone that might now give them the link the web page and ask them to contact us. We have shared the pictures with a naturalist with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He shared it with some other people and none of them could figure it out.

If you have any comments or ideas of what it might be please leave a comment at the bottom of the page.

Thanks and have a great day!
Tim

Update August 9, 2007
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation this is a Slug Caterpillar that will turn into a butterfly. She said the hairs will break off and cause a rash if you touch them so if you spot one just look – don’t touch. Thanks to everyone that helped identify this “Alien Bug”.
Have a great day!
Tim
